Surgical dermabrasion used for scars that cannot be removed with a laser.

Surgical dermabrasion – also known as Surgical removal of acne scars or surgical TCA

Surgical dermabrasion is performed for the treatment of acne scars in limited areas. This applies to a specific type of scar – the so-called Icepick and Boxcar. This type of scar cannot be repaired with laser treatments. In this case, they are a supplement to the procedure.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia using a surgical milling machine and medium-deep peeling (TCA chemical dermabrasion). This type of procedure is not performed on the entire surface of the face, only in designated areas. The initial healing process until the scab falls off is about 1 week.

Later stages of healing concern the so-called evening out of color and the removal of erythema. After about 6 months, the procedure is supplemented with a laser treatment and a series of mesotherapy using Dermapen.

How does it work?

Surgical dermabrasion is a medical procedure that involves mechanical abrasion of the epidermis and upper layers of the dermis to smooth the skin and reduce scarring. This procedure is performed in a doctor’s office or in an aesthetic medicine clinic by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

Surgical dermabrasion is used to treat:

Surgical dermabrasion is performed under local or general anesthesia. The duration of the procedure depends on the area being treated. It usually lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

After surgical dermabrasion, the skin is red and swollen. The patient should expect pain and discomfort for several days after the procedure.

Here are the steps taken during surgical dermabrasion:

  1. The doctor cleanses the skin and applies anesthesia.
  2. The doctor uses a dermabrasion device to remove the outer layers of the skin.
  3. The doctor applies a dressing to the area undergoing the procedure.

After surgical dermabrasion, the patient should follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid sun exposure for at least 6 months
  • Use a sunscreen with a high SPF, even on cloudy days
  • Protect the skin from injury
  • Use medications prescribed by the doctor

The skin undergoing surgical dermabrasion begins to regenerate within a few days after the procedure. The new skin is smoother and more uniform than the skin before the procedure.

Surgical dermabrasion is an effective procedure that can improve the appearance of the skin. However, it is also an invasive procedure that may come with some risks, such as:

  • Infection
  • Discoloration
  • Scarring

Before deciding to undergo surgical dermabrasion, you should consult with your doctor to discuss the potential benefits and risks of the procedure.
