Lip asymmetry

Our aesthetic medicine clinic often receives patients who want to even out their “crooked lips”. Lip asymmetry may result from natural beauty, injury, the effect of paralysis of motor nerves in the face, strokes or incorrect implantation of hyaluronic acid.

In some cases, we are dealing with so-called dynamic asymmetry, which appears when the patient speaks or smiles.

A separate group of patients, on the other hand, are those whose lip asymmetry has been caused by muscle dysfunction, plastic surgery of the hare lip, post-accident scars or scars caused by frequent herpes.

Humans are not naturally symmetrical creatures, so there should be no serious reasons for having asymmetry.

How can it be corrected?

  • dissolving hyaluronic acid – if administered in excess or incorrectly,
  • evacuation or dissolving and massaging lumps after the occasional diffusion of acid between the fibers of the circular muscle of the lips,
  • correction of asymmetry using hyaluronic acid,
  • permanent makeup,
  • combination of lip augmentation and modeling procedures with hyaluronic acid with permanent makeup, which aims to complement the uneven color of the red lip

Lip asymmetry is an unevenness in their shape, size or proportions. It can be caused by various factors, including:

  • inborn genetic predispositions
  • injuries
  • diseases such as Bell’s palsy
  • aging

Lip asymmetry can be a source of complexes and lower self-esteem. Two basic methods of its correction are available in aesthetic medicine:

  • Plastic surgery – this is the most invasive method that allows for the permanent correction of lip asymmetry. It involves cutting out or transplanting tissue, as well as lifting the corners of the mouth.
  • Aesthetic medicine procedures – these are less invasive methods that allow for the temporary or permanent correction of lip asymmetry. The next most commonly used procedure is lip filling with hyaluronic acid. What’s more, hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally occurring in the skin, which is responsible for its hydration and firmness. Thanks to its use, you can increase the volume of the lips, even out their shape and proportions, as well as lift the corners of the mouth.

The procedure of lip filling with hyaluronic acid is relatively simple and safe. It is performed under local anesthesia. The procedure lasts about 30 minutes and does not require hospitalization. After the procedure, minor swelling and bruising may occur, which usually disappear within a few days.

The effects of lip filling with hyaluronic acid last from 6 to 12 months. After this time, the procedure can be repeated.

The choice of the method of correcting lip asymmetry depends on the individual needs and preferences of the patient. If the asymmetry of the lips is slight, it can be corrected with aesthetic medicine procedures. In the case of more advanced asymmetry, plastic surgery may be necessary.
