Wrinkles
Wrinkles are long, linear furrows that appear on the skin temporarily (expression wrinkle) or permanently (static wrinkle, fixed wrinkle). The main cause of wrinkles is generally considered to be the skin aging process, where local dystrophy occurs. Their formation is also influenced by:
- cell damage due to excessive exposure to UV radiation (photoaging)
- frequent, regular skin wrinkling (in the case of rich facial expressions, long-term skin flexion, during sleep)
- sudden, significant weight loss (both due to weight loss and diseases)
- unhygienic lifestyle, smoking, alcohol abuse, drug use
- lack of physical activity and, consequently, poor metabolism
- genes
- dehydration

The most popular classification of wrinkle types refers mainly to their location, then they are often given. Specific names:
“Lion’s wrinkle”
This is a longitudinal furrow (or furrows – there are usually 1 to 3 of them) located between the eyebrows, visible when making a so-called “threatening face”. It is definitely more pronounced in men than in women. Prevention of the formation of a furrow – a lion’s wrinkle involves relaxing the muscles with Botox and, if necessary, filling with cross-linked hyaluronic acid.
Transverse forehead wrinkles
These are numerous, horizontal, transverse folds of the skin, which are often caused by raising the eyebrows – a surprised face. Forehead wrinkles also arise as a result of compensatory raising of the eyebrows with excess skin on the forehead and upper eyelid, which usually deepens with age. In some cases, before using Botox, it is worth considering eyelid plastic surgery first. In some cases, hyaluronic acid preparations can be used.
“Crow’s feet”
These are radiant wrinkles extending from the outer corners of the eyes to the sides, sometimes also down and up. They can be seen clearly when smiling or tightening the eyelid slit. Their consolidation is facilitated by frequent exposure to UV radiation and rich facial expressions. In the initial phase, “crow’s feet” can be prevented by regular Botox injections. In the case of permanent wrinkles, it is additionally recommended to perform a “madonna lift” laser procedure, and in advanced cases, additional filling with hyaluronic acid. Sometimes, eyelid plastic surgery is recommended.
“Rabbit wrinkle”
This is a set of wrinkles extending from the inner corner of the eye along the nose. The furrows are most expressive during a wide smile and sniffing – especially in the case of unpleasant odors. Preventing the appearance and permanent appearance of this type of wrinkles involves injecting the appropriate muscle group with Botox.
Wrinkles under the eyes
They are located on the lower eyelid. They often intersect each other, creating a mesh effect. Most often, wrinkles under the eyes are caused by sagging skin of the lower eyelid, loss of moisture, loss of subcutaneous tissue and photoaging. In the initial phase, it is recommended to perform regular needle mesotherapy treatments and laser fractionation, which will shrink the tissue and reduce wrinkles. If this problem is neglected to a large extent, it may be necessary to perform surgical blepharoplasty of the lower and upper eyelids.
“Smoker’s wrinkles”
This is the name we give to wrinkles that appear radially and vertically around the mouth. Although the name indicates a problem of only one group (smokers), it also affects non-smokers. These wrinkles are most easily highlighted during the so-called “pout” expression. The most popular treatment for eliminating this type of wrinkle is lip contouring with hyaluronic acid combined with their direct filling. In some cases, when the wrinkles are very fixed, laser treatments and chemical peels are additionally used.
Neck wrinkles
These are usually transverse, pronounced wrinkles, although in very slim and elderly people they can also run longitudinally. Their occurrence may be related to slouching, frequent lowering of the chin, sagging skin associated with loss of hydration and stretching of collagen fibers, loss of subcutaneous tissue, sagging of the broad neck muscles. Needle mesotherapy, filling of deep furrows with fillers and laser treatments are used as prevention. In difficult cases, a surgical facelift is possible.
Neckline wrinkles
They most often appear longitudinally and vertically, between the breasts. Less often, they are transverse lines. It is commonly believed that this type of wrinkles is associated with the position of the body during sleep. The reason for their formation may also be excessive exposure to UV radiation and loss of water from the skin in this area. In addition, the best way to prevent wrinkles on the décolleté is microneedle mesotherapy, sometimes hyaluronic acid filling and laser treatments.
In some cases, with a thick subcutaneous layer, the use of poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra) in a specially selected dilution gives great results.
Nasolabial folds
Although the nasolabial fold is an anatomical term, it is a popular term for wrinkles running from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Its outline can be visible even in young people, but with the aging process and skin sagging, it usually deepens significantly. The formation of wrinkles in the nasolabial folds may be caused by the loss of subcutaneous fat tissue in the facial area (usually associated with weight loss or age). In this case, it is important to diagnose the cause of the wrinkles. What’s more, in young people, filling the furrow with hyaluronic acid can give a spectacular effect, in middle-aged people it may be necessary to perform so-called cheek volumetry and laser lifting. Sometimes several techniques must be used to achieve the effect. In people with significant tissue laxity, the only option left is a surgical lift.
In order to effectively prevent the formation of wrinkles, an aesthetic medicine specialist must thoroughly examine the condition of our skin, determine the biological age and the degree of advancement of changes and select the appropriate anti-aging prophylaxis, such as botox or needle mesotherapy.
In the case of wrinkles that appear regardless of our facial expressions, it is worth considering:
- chemical peels
- tretinoin mask
- use of botulinum toxin
- fractionated laser CO2 laser
- filling wrinkles with hyaluronic acid
- volume treatments
Only a qualified aesthetic medicine doctor will select the appropriate method for your wrinkles. Following the principle that “prevention is better than cure”, do not delay and make an appointment with a specialist today and you will avoid invasive surgical procedures for a long time.
